Taste of Childhood

Mazapán

The first time I tasted a mazapan, I didn’t think much of it. It was small, soft, and sweet, nothing extraordinary. But as the years passed, I began to realize that mazapanes weren’t just candy. They were the flavor of my childhood.

Afternoons were always the same: the hum of the breeze in the kitchen, the faint sound of cartoons in the background, and that familiar clatter of my mother’s spoon against the pot. After school, I would sit at the table, swinging my legs under the chair, watching as the sugar got suck into her hands as she kneaded the dough. The air always smelled like comfort, sweetness, warmth, and safety.

Mazapanes were more than just a snack. They were the pause between childhood chaos and calm. Between running outside barefoot and sitting still long enough to taste something made with love. I’d press them into shapes with my fingers, pretending they were treasures from a faraway land, before popping one into my mouth and letting it dissolve into sweetness.

Even now, when I make them, I’m transported back to those afternoons. The world outside feels too fast, but for a moment, I can slow it down, just like back then. Every mazapan is a time machine. It reminds me of sunlight filtering through the kitchen window, of sticky hands and laughter, of how something so simple could mean so much. Childhood lives inside those tiny balls of sweets, and every bite feels like going home
